Low Vision Clinic
Established in 1986 by the Jackson Central Lions Club, the Low Vision Clinic provides low vision consultations for children whose vision is not correctable by conventional prescription glasses or contact lenses. The Low Vision Clinic provides special services to any child from birth through secondary level who is currently enrolled in an educational program in the state or who is a legal resident of Mississippi. Our highly-trained staff collaborates to provide a comprehensive functional assessment of the visually impaired child. Staff members include a Doctor of Optometry with specialized training in low vision; specialists in orientation and mobility for evaluation of distance aids and mobility needs; a classroom teacher for evaluation of near aids in the classroom setting; and a school counselor.
Services:
- Low Vision Aid Loaner Program to school systems
- Visual acuity in easily understood terms
- Training and follow-up support in the use of prescribed low vision aids for student, family members, and school staff
- A written report of the low vision evaluation with specific suggestions for school/home
Low Vision Aids provided:
- Telescopes for distance v iewing
- Magnifiers – stand, handheld, and illuminated for reading printed material
- Sunfilters to improve outdoor glare
