The MSB Music Department has played an active role in the school’s history and activities for many years. Performance opportunities are available for students of all ages throughout the year. MSB’s performing ensembles include Elementary Choir, Middle School Band, Marching Band, Concert Band, Drumline, Show Choir, and Color Guard. Courses are also available in smaller settings in applied band, applied piano, and general music.

Annual programs and concerts are held both on and off campus with the most popular being our Winter Holiday Concert, Spring Showcase, the Homecoming Parade and Battle of the Bands, and the bi-annual Performing Arts Showcases which are a part of the South Central Association of Schools for the Blind (SCASB) competitions. Various ensembles and individuals get invited frequently to share their talents in the community.

Music is very much an academic study and MSB employs highly qualified staff that teaches students using the state music curriculum. Additionally, students at MSB have the unique opportunity to learn music braille or modified standard music notation in addition to individualized techniques that assist in learning more advanced music theory.

Many believe individuals with blindness have a greater aptitude for music and while that can sometimes be true, the reality is MSB’s students perform and work hard just like anyone else, and perhaps gain a stronger satisfaction in their accomplishments by overcoming any barriers they have. Students at MSB use music and any other opportunity at the school to show the world that individuals with a visual impairment are every bit as capable as their sighted peers.
